Garment of the Week: Cardigans
TLDR
This week's issue covers everything you need to know about cardigans, including a history, style guide, sustainable buying options, and pivots for those who aren't ready to commit. You'll find suggestions for sustainable and ethical brands like Nice as Heck and Uniqlo, as well as vintage and secondhand options from eBay and Depop. Each suggestion includes practical tips on how to style cardigans in both high fashion and streetwear looks, with specific advice on textures, layering, and accessories.
Cardigans are cool: A brief history
Cardigans have a rich history dating back to the late 19th century.
Originally, they were made from materials such as wool, cashmere, and cotton, and were designed to be worn as a type of outerwear. They became popular as a means of providing warmth and protection from the elements and were often seen as a more practical alternative to heavier coats.
In the mid-20th century, cardigans became a staple of casual fashion, with a variety of styles and materials being used to create this versatile garment. Synthetic materials like acrylic became popular for their affordability and durability, and cardigans were embraced by young people and subcultures as a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity.
In recent years, cardigans have experienced a resurgence in popularity, with designers and fashion houses incorporating them into their collections in new and innovative ways. Cardigans are now made from a wide range of materials, including natural fibers like wool, silk, and alpaca, as well as more sustainable and eco-friendly options like organic cotton and recycled polyester.
Style Guide
Whether dressed up or dressed down, cardigans have become a versatile and timeless addition to any wardrobe. They are a timeless choice for warmth, and their versatile nature makes them a great option for layering with other pieces to create a unique and personalized look.
Styling cardigans can be a great way to elevate any outfit and express personal style. Here's a brief guide on how to style cardigans from both high fashion and streetwear perspectives:
Opt for high-end materials such as wool, blends, or rare wools (mohair, alpaca) to ensure durability and warmth.
Learn to take cardigans (and all garments alike) out of their original context; just because cardigans were once more formal attire, it doesn’t mean that they can only be worn this way now.
Experiment with different textures, such as pairing a chunky knit cardigan with a smooth silk shirt or vice versa.
Try layering a cardigan over a graphic t-shirt, wife pleaser, or mock/turtleneck for a bold and streetwear-oriented look.
Try wearing a cardigan as a layering piece, layered over a button-up shirt, or under a blazer/overcoat for added warmth and style.
Pair a cropped cardigan with Carpenter pants or baggy denim for a relaxed yet put-together look.
Workwear in general paired with more formal elements creates an extremely interesting dynamic - I will go over this in another issue
Experiment with bold patterns, bright colors, and oversized fits for a more statement-making look.
Accessorize with streetwear staples such as chunky sneakers, beanies, or statement sunglasses for a complete look. Or, opt for the more formal look with a loafer, derby, or boots.
No matter the style, the key to styling cardigans is to have fun and be confident in your choices. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things.

Mohair Bark Cardigan | Nice as Heck ($120)
Nice as Heck has a great Mohair option that has, although slightly pricey, great texture and a boxy fit. Again, if you couldn’t tell by the price, this would most definitely fall into the category of a statement piece and would limit how much you would want to wear it.
(Vintage/Secondhand)
Vintage Jantzen Stripe Fuzzy Wool Mohair Cardigan M | eBay ($374.99)
If you couldn't tell by the price, these vintage Jantzen cardigans are worth a decent chunk of money due to their use of mohair and prevalence during the punk cardigan renaissance spearheaded by Kurt Cobain. I would not recommend buying this piece, but it is awesome.

Pivots
Zip-up hoodies and work jackets are great pivots for those who want to transition into cardigans gradually. Both styles offer the ability to layer, adding warmth and versatility to any outfit. Zip-up hoodies are a casual and relaxed option that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
Work jackets, on the other hand, offer a more structured and polished look, perfect for errands or a night out.
So, whether you're looking for a more casual or formal option, zip-up hoodies, and work jackets are great alternatives to cardigans that can still add that extra layer of warmth and style to any outfit. Don't be afraid to experiment and try something new – you might just surprise yourself and find your new favorite layering piece!
