Style Guide
Everyone knows what boots are right?
I will forego the introduction to boots but here is something interesting: if the dating of cave paintings in northern Spain is correct, humans have been wearing boots since 15,000 B.C.
From high-fashion runway pieces to rugged work boots, there is a style for everyone and every situation. The key to incorporating boots into your wardrobe is finding the right balance between style and function.
Brands like Red Wing, Dr. Martens, and Timberland have been creating high-quality boots for decades, with a focus on durability, comfort, and timeless style. Investing in boots from these brands means you're not only investing in a fashionable accessory but also a functional piece that can last for years to come.
Avoid fast fashion brands and opt for well-crafted boots that prioritize quality and longevity. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but it also supports ethical and sustainable production practices.
Boots are versatile and can be incorporated into various outfits, adding a unique and stylish touch. From sleek derbies to rugged combat boots, there is a boot for every look and occasion.
How to style boots:
Embrace the versatility of boots by incorporating them into your daily wardrobe. A pair of boots can easily be dressed up or down, making them a great choice for both casual and formal outfits.
Prioritize quality and craftsmanship over fast fashion trends. Well-made boots can be a lifelong investment, so it's essential to choose brands and styles that focus on durability and timeless design.
Experiment with different styles, textures, and colors. Whether you prefer a classic black leather boot or a bold statement piece in a vibrant hue, boots can elevate your outfit and showcase your personal style.
Don't be afraid to mix and match styles. Pair a rugged work boot with a tailored suit for an unexpected twist or wear a sleek high-fashion boot with a casual outfit for a polished touch.
Accessorize thoughtfully. Choose complimentary socks, belts, and other accessories to enhance the look and feel of your boots.
Now that we have talked about how to style boots, allow me to give you some context into some of the categories that exist within the garment’s space:
Derbies
Derbies are a versatile and classic type of footwear that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. They feature open lacing, which sets them apart from their close cousin, the Oxford. A popular brand for derbies is Dr. Martens, which offers a variety of styles and colors in high-quality leather. Their iconic 1461 model is well-loved for its durability and timeless design, making it a staple in many wardrobes
Hiking Boots
Hiking boots are designed for outdoor enthusiasts and provide comfort, support, and protection on rugged terrains. Brands like Danner and Merrell are known for their high-quality hiking boots that deliver superior performance, traction, and durability. Danner's Mountain Light series, for example, is an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable and stylish hiking boot.
Work Boots
Work boots are built for heavy-duty use, offering both protection and support for long days on the job. They often feature slip-resistant soles, steel toes, and durable materials like full-grain leather. Brands like Red Wing, Timberland, and Wolverine are renowned for their top-notch work boots. The Red Wing Iron Ranger is a classic example, combining rugged durability with timeless style.
Cowboy Boots
Cowboy boots are a staple of Western wear, characterized by their pointed toes, Cuban heels, and decorative stitching. Brands like Lucchese, Tony Lama, and Justin Boots are known for their exceptional craftsmanship and wide range of styles. From traditional to modern designs, cowboy boots add a touch of Americana to any outfit.
High-Fashion Boots
High-fashion boots are designed to make a statement and often feature unique materials, cutting-edge designs, and luxury craftsmanship. Brands like Our Legacy, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga lead the pack when it comes to high-fashion boots. The Our Legacy Camion Boot, for instance, is a sleek and contemporary option that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
There are many more - perhaps too many to mention, but the important concept here is all boots serve a similar function in the way that they elevate some element of an outfit, whether that be practically or aesthetically.
Where/How to buy
Just like workwear, boots are an investment. Thus, like anything quality, second-hand options are your friends.
$$$ (100+)
(Retail)
Camion Boot | Our Legacy ($477)
(Vintage)
Classic Moc | Red Wings ($309.99)
$$ (50-100)
Although I am providing recommendations for boots that are under $100, remember that most boots in this price range lack quality and, thus, longevity as well. This is exactly why these recommendations are second-hand/ on-sale and there is no under $50 section.
(Retail)
1460 Pascal Snowplow | Dr. Martens ($68)
(Vintage/Secondhand)
Blundstone 550 Boots Mens | eBay ($84.99)
We can’t make a list of boots and not include Blundstones (shoutout GHale). Perfect for the rain, these Australian boots are a great pair of boots IF you can get them for a reasonable price, which these size 9.5 men's are.
(Vintage/Secondhand)
Solovair Black Hi Shine Derby Boot - Mens | eBay ($105.00 OBO)
Fake Dr. Martens??? Hell no. Allow me to introduce you to Solovairs; the company that used to make Dr. Martens before they got huge and started to dip a little in quality. This is no dig at docs, I have 2 pairs. However, Solovair’s superiority as a boot company is undeniable; they are still made in England, Goodyear welted (yes the tire brand, and made from genuine bovine leather. In fact, Solovair means Sole-of-air, which docs are famous for.
Pivots
If you're not quite ready to commit to a full-on boot look, a great way to incorporate boots into your wardrobe is by pairing them with unexpected pieces, like low-top derbies or fusion boots.
Low-top derbies offer a sleek and understated alternative to traditional boots, with the same open lacing system that sets them apart from Oxfords. They can be dressed up with tailored pants or down with jeans and a t-shirt for a versatile and modern look.
Fusion boots, on the other hand, offer a unique blend of styles and materials, combining elements of sneakers and boots for a sporty yet functional look. Brands like Hoka, Nike ACG, Vans and New Balance are known for their fusion boots, which feature bold designs and unique materials like neoprene and nylon.
By experimenting with different styles and textures, you can elevate your outfit with a unique twist that showcases your personal style. Whether you opt for classic leather boots, low-top derbies, or sneaker-fusion boots, there's a style for everyone to enjoy.
Here is a good article to explore fusion boots.
What I picked up this Week
I was in LA recently and stumbled upon the Corridor NYC store, a brand that I have recently been very into. They make high-quality menswear, specializing in knitwear. I picked up this pullover polo and knew I had to grab it. Here is me wearing it:
